India and Ethiopia share a rich history of economic and commercial relations spanning over 2,000 years. These connections date back to the era of the Axumite Kingdom when Indian merchants engaged in trade with Ethiopia’s ancient port of Adulis, exchanging silk and spices for gold and ivory.
In recent times, the liberalization of Ethiopia’s economy has further strengthened business partnerships between the two nations, particularly in sectors such as trade, investment, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
Bilateral trade between India and Ethiopia reached USD 2.8 billion in 2022, with Ethiopia’s exports accounting for approximately USD 80 million. Similarly, in 2021, trade between the two countries stood at USD 1.8 billion, with Ethiopian exports totaling USD 75.13 million (Source: National Bank of Ethiopia).
