MERSA Media Institute, in partnership with Deutsche Welle Akademie, is organizing a second round of new-entrants training under the Media and Journalism education project. The training will be a three-month journalism crash course where trainees from different educational backgrounds will get to experience hands-on journalism education delivered by industry experts. The main role of the assistant trainer will be supporting trainers during in-class sessions and mentorship, helping trainers edit trainees’ stories, accompanying trainees in all field reporting sessions, and preparing and overseeing studio and editing schedules for trainees.

Position: Assistant trainer

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate journalism education training by preparing and organizing training materials, attending all training sessions, and supporting the mentorship of trainees together with training consultants.
  • Ensuring trainees’ assignment delivery and  helping trainers edit trainees’ stories
  • Accompanying trainees in all field reporting sessions
  • Preparing and overseeing studio and editing schedules for trainees 
  • Support the project in the procurement process including preparation of TORs, receipts of quotations, and evaluation of bids
  • Digital publishing and management, graphics design, audio-visual content production for web and social media
  • Assist in event planning, management, and other project-related activities
  • Scheduling meetings, setting agendas, and writing meeting minutes for the project team
  • Organizing, facilitating, and participating in stakeholder meetings
  • Communication: Write, edit, and distribute content, including publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, speeches, and other materials as needed that communicate the organization’s activities
  • Documentation: Maintain database: Resources, contacts, project files
  • Perform any other related task as may be assigned

Required Qualifications

The required qualifications for this position include

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, media, and communication or other related fields.
  • 0-2 years of work experience in a media house
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent use and understanding of Microsoft and Google products
  • Excellent written, editing, and oral communication skills in English and Amharic language
  • Ability to work under pressure
