Safaricom has dramatically reduced mobile data costs by up to 70 Percent

Since its launch in Ethiopia, Safaricom has dramatically reduced mobile data costs by up to 70%. This significant price drop is a direct result of increased competition within the Ethiopian telecom market, spurred by Safaricom’s entry. A recent report commissioned by British International Investment (BII), a shareholder in Safaricom Ethiopia, highlights the positive impact this has had on the country’s digital landscape.

According to the report, Safaricom’s investment in expanding 4G network coverage has enabled millions of Ethiopians to access high-speed internet for the first time. As of June 2024, Safaricom had already signed up 4.4 million customers and built nearly 3,000 network towers, significantly increasing 4G availability across the nation.

The report also emphasizes the broader economic benefits of improved digital connectivity. By lowering data prices and expanding access, Safaricom has created opportunities for businesses, education, and healthcare sectors to grow and develop. This, in turn, has contributed to overall socioeconomic progress in Ethiopia.
