Role Purpose
British Council will implement the Enabling University Peace Education in Regional Conflict/Post-conflict Settings (EUPE) Project – an ambitious and innovative peace education programme in Sudan and Ethiopia. We are seeking a Project Co-ordinator to support the project delivery in Ethiopia to be part of the country delivery team.
Role context
The British Council started implementing the European Union (EU) funded ‘Enabling University Peace Education in Regional Conflict/Post-conflict Settings in Sudan and Ethiopia on 1 February 2021.
The British Council believes that universities can contribute further to positive social change and peacebuilding in Ethiopia by providing high-quality, experiential peace education for their students. In doing so, they will support a generation of young university graduates, particularly women, who can participate more effectively in peacebuilding as students, as active citizens at local, national, or regional levels, and as professionals in their future careers, thereby contributing to building lasting peace.Â
‘Enabling University Peace Education in Regional Conflict/Post-conflict Settings’ enables:
- Collaboration with peacebuilding organizations and students on peace education curriculum development,
- Training university faculty in participatory teaching approaches,
- Support of local researchers to focus on context-specific issues related to peace and link this to teaching, and
- creating the basis for sustainable high-quality peace education courses and research through regional and international cooperation and knowledge exchange.
The project has five main areas of activity:
- Peace education courses for young men and women in universities.
- Context-driven and gender-sensitive peace research
- Support for communities of practice in peacebuilding through collaborative activities and research with universities
- National and regional cooperation in peace education across Africa
- Equitable international partnerships in peace-related subjects between universities in Ethiopia, and universities in the EU/UK.
The project engages with a range of stakeholders, with a focus on undergraduate students, especially female students, in universities; university teachers and researchers, particularly women; civil society organizations, women’s organizations, and other peacebuilding actors, especially those working in communities at the local level; and national, regional, and international centers for peace research. We partner with national government authorities in Ethiopia responsible for higher education and peace.
‘Enabling University Peace Education in Regional Conflict/Post-conflict Settings’ is a three-year project managed by the British Council and funded by the European Union and the British Council.
Main Accountabilities
Program Delivery:
- Support the delivery of all monitoring, evaluation, assessment, and learning as per British Council policy and client requirements.
- Support assessing and evaluating the achievement of all agreed outputs as required by the line manager.
- Relationship Management / Business Development:
- Contribute to building long-term relationships with project partners, project team, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with coalition partners and other key players.
- Resources and People Management:
- Support the implementation of monitoring, evaluation, and learning to implement project activity accurately allocated, forecasted, monitored, and reported.
- Assisting the Project Manager in preparing Quarterly/Annual reports on project progress and will monitor the project activities on a regular basis, developing and maintaining the MIS of the Project
- Ensure that procurement is managed in the highest standards suppliers selected and managed to maximum value for money.
Risk Management:
- To identify, assess, report, and monitor progress in addressing risks to the achievement of project objectives.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Support the delivery of the monitoring and evaluation plan for Ethiopia, using the programme’s monitoring and evaluation framework, tools, templates, and client/donor logical framework as a reference.
Marketing and Communications:
- Liaise with the communication team, responsible for the effective communication and dissemination of relevant monitoring, evaluation, and learning success stories of the programme.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- University Degree in Economic and Economic Development, Statistics, including in development or Social Studies /M.A in Econometrics and Social Statistics or Economic Development.
Minimum/essential
- The consultant must have more than 2 years working in the field of Monitoring and Evaluation.
- At least 1 Year of experience in supporting the delivery of data collection, data analysis, and report writing. Monitoring and Evaluation of projects and/or similar support in an equivalent business environment.
Desirable
- Project Management for Development (PMD).
- Accredited Monitoring and Evaluation certificates.
- Management of Risk (MoR).
Required candidate will need to possess:
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively with tight deadlines.
Additional job requirements
- Some travel and evening work within Ethiopia.
- Some unsocial working hours.
- The job requires medical, criminal records, and/or child protection checks.
Further Information
Consultancy Duration – A national MEL consultant will be employed for a total number of 30 days. In the condition that the EUPE project is extended beyond January 2024, the role may be extended upon the agreement of both parties.
Fees – ETB 1,500/per day.
Location – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Language requirements: English and Amharic are Mandatory.
Requirements – All applicants should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in Ethiopia. The British Council will not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permit.
