Getty Scholars Program Grants for Arts and Humanities Research
The Getty Scholars Program, a project of the Getty Research Institute, offers residential grants, providing financial support and housing, to established researchers who seek to advance knowledge of the arts and humanities while producing cutting-edge scholarship that contributes to the understanding and preservation of cultural heritage.
Getty Scholar grants are for established researchers and professionals who have held Ph.D.’s for at least five years and/or possess strong records of publication and professional activity. Scholars who are at earlier stages of their careers, or still earning their doctorate, may apply for Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships.
The Getty Research Institute also offers an African American Art History Initiative (AAAHI) Fellowship, which provides financial support and housing to scholars who are expanding critical inquiry of African American art and its frameworks.
Getty Scholars are required to be in residence at the Getty Center or Getty Villa, in Los Angeles, California, throughout the duration of their appointment. While in residence, they have the opportunity to spend significant time at one of the world’s premier art history collections while contributing to an international community committed to intellectual exploration and exchange.
Each cohort of scholars’ research projects are focused on an annual theme. The theme for the 2024–2025 cohort is extinction. For more details, please visit the Getty Scholars Program’s webpage.
