1.Gender Officer

Reporting to SAPM, the Gender Officer will be a key member of South area program and will be responsible for the promotion and integration of gender issues across European Commission project, and MSIE in general. She/he will support the project team to promote and priorities gender equality and female empowerment. Transversely, The officer will gent technical guidance and direction from MSIE Senior Gender Advisor.

The officer will shape the project’s awareness raising and service delivery strategy, activities, and resources to ensure that accessible information and service is provided to young people, women, men, their families, and the local community. She/he will also help to improve community and young people awareness on SRH, through establishing strong linkages and collaboration between MSIE and other development partners, civil society organizations (CSOs), local leaders and community groups.

1.       DUTIES/TASKS

Embed gender approaches into project activities

·         Work closely with support office departments to ensure that European Commission project staff and MSIE team members in general understand gender and the importance of working to achieve gender equality within MSIE

·         Collaborate with MSIE departments and Senior Gender advisor to develop a Gender Strategy for the organisation,

·         Work with local implementing partners to integrate gender responsive approaches in the design, development, and implementation of the European Commission project work plans

·         Increase collaboration between field teams, government health offices and other partners to conduct community dialogues and educative sessions addressing myths and misconceptions on gender

·         Innovate, design, and oversee cost-effective youth and adolescent engagement activities which will increase awareness on gender issues relating to SRH/FP within the project intervention areas.

·         Coordinate project evaluation ensuring inclusion of gender equality aspects in the project activities

·         Facilitate trainings and workshops in gender related areas

·         Support preparation of media spot, community events and campaign

Embed gender approaches throughout the organization

·         Assess the needs of MSIE south area programs and their deliverables, and tailor appropriate gender equality approaches and solutions in a manner which is collaborative and client focused.

·         Provide advice and support to all MSIE channels at the program office to ensure that activities are designed in a gender sensitive or gender transformative way

·         Ensure that gender data are well captured, analyzed, stored and put into use for programming, community awareness, sensitization, lobbying and/or advocacy.

·         Work with Support office, Senior Gender advisor and Research and Monitoring and Evaluation teams to capture, document and share lessons learnt, testimonials and case studies to improve gender equity throughout MSIE.

·         Work with support office external relations team to develop gender sensitive/transformative materials for promotion, awareness, and sensitization around SRH

External representation

·         With MSIE’s external relations lead, represent MSIE in various SRH and gender networks and movements, and actively participate in advocacy activities

·         Maintain strong team relationships among key stakeholders, leaders, and community groups, on a formal and informal basis, across all community functions

·         Upon request and delegation from the Area Program Manager, represent the program office, in various meetings, events, initiatives and dialogues and ensure regional visibility is maintained.

·         Map potential local and regional organization and start partnerships engagement in the area of gender and disability inclusion. 

Job Requirements

a.       Education:

BA/MSc in Gender or Social Studies

b.      Experience:

·         At least 4 years’ experience in gender related project design/management and/or advocacy, preferably in the health organization or reproductive health &family planning;

·         At least 5 years’ experience in working with youth and women and their groups in the areas of health promotion.

·         Strong experience in preparing and delivering presentations to wide rage of stakeholders

B.      Skills, Attitudes and Attributes

·         Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills

·         Excellent training design and facilitation skills; ability to adapt training for different audiences

·         Ability to motivate teams

·         Excellent oral, written and multi-media communication skills in English and Amharic, preferably additional local languages

·         Proven ability to ‘sell’ ideas, concepts and to motivate and influence organizational culture and way of working

·         IT literate – strong competency in Microsoft office applications

·         Understanding major policies/issues of large bilateral/multilateral donors, government policies, regional policies;

·         Collaborative approach to team working;

·         Strong personal commitment to the goals of MSI and to put it into practice;

·         Pro-choice

Duty Station: Hawassa, South Area Program Office

Type of Employment: Contract until June 2025 with possibility of extension

Salary: As per MSI Ethiopia Reproductive Choice Salary Scale
