Postdoctoral researcher in Implementation Research
Background
The “Enabling environments for NCD risk reduction in Ethiopia” (ENABLE) project is funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe (Grant agreement ID: 101137232). ENABLE aims to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Ethiopia by reducing the life-long prevalence of major NCD risk factors among pregnant women through multi-level actions to promote healthy diets, physical activity and reduce exposure to air pollution in a clean and supportive urban environment. The ENABLE project is dedicated to the implementation of pragmatic and effective interventions for promoting healthy diets, physical activity and reduce exposure to air pollution within a health-promoting urban environment for pregnant women and their families from the antenatal care entry point, as well as from the community.
The project is coordinated by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), and the consortium is comprised of 9 more international and Ethiopian partners. From Ethiopia, Jimma University (JU), Haramaya University (HU) and Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH), along with international partners from University of Oslo (UiO), Lund University (LU), Uppsala University (UU), Wageningen University (WU), Vital Strategies, and Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).
This project aims to implement an intervention package for NCD prevention and health promotion targeted at pregnant women in Ethiopia, using digital tools. This includes designing and executing studies, analyzing data, and communicating the results through peer-reviewed scientific publications, to identified national and international stakeholders, through presentations at relevant conferences and in other relevant fora.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct implementation research with senior research support from EPHI and NIPH (Norway).
- Coordinate and support implementation research to understand the local context and the needs of stakeholders (i.e. pregnant women, healthcare workers, and community leaders) .
- Contribute to the development of interventions that could support prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among pregnant women, which could be implemented within the existing structure of antenatal care (ANC) services.
- Support the tailoring and implementation of a digital tool and contribute to delivery of the interventions through the digital tool.
- Contribute to comprehensive process evaluation.
- Lead and contribute to the development of scientific manuscripts and other relevant communication products (i.e., website, newsletter, and commentaries) in collaboration with ENABLE partners.
- Responsible for managing continuous communication with the ENABLE partners, health center staff, and project managers engaged in the implementation and/or evaluation of the implementation of ENABLE interventions.
- Other project related activities identified by the research team lead and principal investigator.
Duty station/Location
- The successful candidate will be based in EPHI – Addis Ababa with frequent travels to study sites.

- The postdoctoral will be recruited as soon as possible for a period of 24 months.
Management and reporting
- The postdoctoral will work under the project directors(PIs) supervision of the EPHI and NIPHI with oversight from work package lead
Job Requirements
- Ph.D. in public health or other related field, with a focus on maternal and child health.
- Prior experience in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, interpretation, and presentation.
- Proven experience in implementation research. Experience with implementation of digital tools (i.e. mhealth; ehealth, digital health) is desirable.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with primary healthcare workers and stakeholders and supervise field research works.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
