Good Neighbors Ethiopia (GNE) is one of the field branches of Good Neighbors International. GNE was founded in 1997 in the spirit to provide self-reliance for neighbors suffering from poverty and discrimination through sustainable development beyond aid. GNE strives to improve lives of the needy segment of society in Ethiopia, especially children’s lives, through education, health, water and sanitation, partnership, and income generation activities since its establishment in 1997.

Grant Accountant

  • Responsible To: Finance and Procurement Coordinator
  • Term of Employment: one (1) year

Overview of the Position

The main responsibilities of the grant accountant is monitors the financial progress of projects, investigates variances, approves expenses, and ensures that project billings are issued to customers and payments collected. They may also assist with the development of the financial aspects of the business case for each proposed project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that payment of taxes and other government obligations are completed on time;
  • Maintain formats and other necessarily documents and reports in relation to assignments;
  • Ensure day to day accounting activities in respect of policies and procedures, state financial legal requirements and donor/organization guidelines;
  • Responsible for cash movements, journal entries and for daily cash reconciliations;
  • Responsible for voucher system and its management in accordance to the internal procedures;
  • Preparation of the monthly cash analysis;
  • Maintain contacts with local banks, assist in bank account reconciliations;
  • Categorize payments clearly and precisely under the appropriate expenditure codes of respective projects;
  • Provide ledgers and other relevant financial documents to the project documentation;
  • Ensure that purchase related expenses are supported with all the necessary financial documents as per procurement procedures;
  • Check the quality of invoices and payment documents after payments are made according to the procurement procedures;
  • Prepare vouchers, cheques, CPOs, transfer letters;
  • Invoices payment if necessary;
  • Ensure the respect of GNE Code of Conduct and GNE’s zero tolerance policy of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), humanitarian principles and contribute to the integration of Protection and Age, Gender, Diversity (AGD) mainstreaming into GNE programming.
  • Other duties related to the position assigned by line supervisor. 

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • BA Degree in accounting, Accounting and finance or related field;
  • A minimum of 5 years working experience in grant financial management.  

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Commitment to the vision and mission of GNE.
  • Knowledge of UN agencies and donor financial guidelines and management.
  • Previous experiences with international NGOs and donors will be considered an asset.
  • Perfect knowledge of Ethiopian accounting, taxation and procurement rules/regulation;
  • Relevant experience in using accounting software;
  • Relevant experience in procurement procedures;
  • Organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office Tools;
  • Demonstrate proficiency with MS Excel spreadsheet skills.
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently, taking initiative, setting priorities;
  • Planning and prioritizing skills;
  • Fluent in English and Amharic;
