High-caliber overseas students who want to pursue a master’s or doctorate by research at the university may apply for the University of Sydney overseas Scholarship, a postgraduate research scholarship. The scholarship, which can currently be worth up to $129,000, offers students a stipend to help with living expenses and tuition.
The fellowship is open to students who are enrolled in a higher degree by research at the University of Sydney or who have received an unconditional offer of admission.
Depending on the program’s start date, different deadlines apply for admission to a postgraduate research program. Each year, there are four research periods. You must submit your research degree application in September of the year before if you want to start in Research Period 1 or Research Period 2 (beginning in January or March). You must submit an application by December of the preceding year if you want to begin in Research Period 3 or Research Period 4 (beginning in July or October, respectively).

The scholarship may be held for 3.5 years for research doctorate studies, or 1.75 years for research master’s studies.
Benefits
For 2023, the scholarship is valued at $37,207 a year. The amount is indexed on 1 January each year.
Eligibility
Candidates must:
- Be a commencing or enrolled international student.
- Have an outstanding record of academic achievement and research potential.
- Have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled in a master’s by research or Ph.D. programme at the University of Sydney.
